Chapter Sixteen

I sat across from Xiaoming as he plopped down at the chrome Formica table. His blue terrycloth robe fell open to show a set of striped boxers and a stained wife-beater. Judging from what I could see, it looked like maybe he had put on some new socks beneath his open-toed slippers. But nothing else had changed. He had suffered a werewolf attack several months ago, and for whatever reason, decided to use that opportunity to return everything to exactly as it had been before.

It seemed kind of dumb to me at the time, but now? Now, I kind of got it. When it came time to hire my own real estate witch, I wondered if I'd do the same thing.

That said, my place was in slightly "more worthy to be restored" shape that this guy's. Every surface was covered in a dingy film of yellow tobacco smoke. The kitchen smelled of burned fish sauce from yesterday's dinner, old ginger, and tobacco smoke. Lit incense swirled around his altar to the gods, the oranges and electric candles lost in the haze of his tobacco smoke. I guess there was more than one way to protect your home from intruders. Namely, asphyxiation.

I was bone tired. Between packing up the rest of the hotel, doing the coffee run, dropping Ms. D'rela off at the airport and hauling her bags around because her scrawny little bird arms couldn't lift her overnight bag, I was ready to just fall over and die. But, the thing was, if I didn't figure out what was going on, I might find myself in an involuntary position of falling over and dying. Although, every minute that passed in Xiaoming company made it a more and more welcome option.

I pulled the earrings out of my jacket pocket and unwrapped them from the napkin I stole from the lobby bar.

"Where you find this?" he glared at me as he sucked on his cigarette.

I waved away the smoke. "Xiaoming, don't you think you could give it a rest for like… the whole five minutes I'm here… I gotta wash my clothes every time I step through your door."

He responded by blowing his cloud in my direction. "The quicker you get this over, the quicker you get out."

"Right," I sighed, realizing that I was probably the reason why he went to such extraordinary efforts to make things so unpleasant every time I visited. "So, there was this model. She had me pack up her stuff and her earrings bit me when I tried to pick them up."

"They are magic," he replied with finality. "You go now."

"I know that," I said with a sigh, urging him to delve a bit deeper into the encyclopedia of his mind. "I just need to know what kind of magic."

He ashed onto the carpet. "What do you think I am, Maggie? Some Google? Some library? How should I know?"
